It was a lovely sentiment between Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw in the movie, Love Story, but the catchphrase, "love means never having to say you're sorry", simply doesn’t ring true. Apologies are necessary for healing relationships—for both parties. God expects us to both offer forgiveness and ask for it. Opposite from the movie, Fireproof, the wise father encouraged his son to give his marriage another chance instead of going for divorce—by giving him a Christian journal to read and follow for 40 days.
In reality, there is no such a thing as perfect relationship. But if both are acquiescent to each other, place God in the midst of the relationship, creases can be ironed out for the best. Little irritations left unresolved can invite bitterness where love should reside.
Apologize in a timely manner the minute you realize you have wronged your mate. Be sincere and never add a “but” statement to your apology ( as in, “I’m sorry I hurt your feelings, but I was just trying to get my point across.” ). Never say, “If I hurt you, I’m sorry.” The "if” denotes that you question your responsibility. Toss pride out of the window and be accountable.
Real unconditional LOVE means having to say—you’re sorry—and meaning it.
