Psalm 118:24 (ESV)
"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
When I begin overthinking yesterday or worrying about tomorrow, I need to remind myself to stay present. My mind easily wanders back to things I wish I had done differently or gets caught up in what tomorrow might bring. When that happens, the words, "This is the day," wave like a flag before me—serving as a loving reminder from the LORD to come back to where I am right now—to live and rejoice in the present. He has given me another day to love, to grow, and to live with more purpose. I cannot change yesterday or control tomorrow, but I can meet the LORD here, receive His grace, and choose how I will live the hours I have been given today.
I used to think joy was something I could feel only when life was going well. Psalm 118:24 has challenged that idea, especially in the simple words, "let us rejoice." I know it is easier said than done. However, I am learning that rejoicing is not always a feeling that comes naturally; sometimes it is a choice I must make. On days filled with frustration, grief, or plain exhaustion, that choice does not erase the hurt or require me to pretend everything is fine. For me, it is a quiet way of saying, "This day is hard, and the world is not as it should be, but I still believe the LORD is good and that today matters."
I am learning to notice God’s gifts in the ordinary moments of my day. Whether at home, at work, or simply going about my routine, gratitude helps me shift my focus from what I am missing to what is already in front of me—whether gazing at a beautiful sunrise, the falling leaves as they change in color, a breath of fresh air, or simply sharing coffee with my beloved David at a nearby cafe. These small moments remind me that life itself is a gift from the Creator. When I slow down and pay attention, I no longer feel I need to accomplish something extraordinary for my day—or my life —to have meaning. For me, a meaningful day is one I live with intention, staying open to what the LORD places before me and carrying a grateful heart along the way.
All glory and honor belong to the LORD JESUS—the Author and Finisher of my faith (Hebrews 12:2) and my Creator (Colossians 1:16).
Heavenly Father God, thank You for the gift of today and that You are all sufficient.
May You continue to bless and protect us. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
